Stay at home......... again

After a month of named storms and what can only be described as ‘a bit of a battering’ the weather forecast from the Met office for November is looking much better; meanwhile, stage left due to the huge increase in covid infections; Boris is having to say; ‘stay at home’

So where do we go from here?

We’re hoping that golf courses will be allowed to reopen sooner rather than later as the rule that you can meet one person from outside your household in a park could arguably translate into a socially distanced 2 ball. - Wrag Barn Park has a certain ring and if anyone has a hotline to a decision maker perhaps this argument could be put forward for consideration. There is a government petition circulating so please sign it if you’d like golf to be able to continue.

There is no doubt that the balancing act of making decisions to save lives from the short term covid threat while mitigating the long term damage to society in terms of mental health, economic stability and other illnesses comes with some tough calls. I would still urge everyone to lobby for the golf sector as our friends at Wrag Barn rely on the community spirit of our club, even if it’s golf only; especially those who live on their own.

Now for something completely different;

Many people will know that I have spent most of the summer quietly working on a planning application for some houses on the Academy Course. This project has been passed on with great relief to a company called Bewley Homes. We exchanged on an Option Agreement with them on Friday and they will be taking the application forward. This news may generate a strong reaction from some as there are already a number of applications in for housing along Shrivenham road and the Academy Course has been a wonderful stepping stone for beginners to progress from the driving range to the main course, not forgetting our Junior Section. There is a long way to go but it would give us the opportunity to ensure the long term future of the club with a larger car park, upgraded facilities and there is room for a new practice area to be created, so don’t lose heart.

We will use the small pot of money from the Option to start improvements just to show that we don’t intend to ride off into the sunset. It gives Tim a chance to get on a digger to do more drainage - he’s threatening to dig up some of my garden, so anticipate a Punch and Judy show in front of the clubhouse!
